Are we to keep the Sabbath?
I believe that we are to observe and guard the Torah as I mentioned in last weeks’ study and therefore I believe we are to observe the Shabbat. Why do we observe and guard the Shabbat and how do we do this? We are to be set-apart because Yahuah is set-apart and He sets us apart (Leviticus 11:44-45; 19:2; 20:7, 1 Peter 1:16)
Yahuah blessed the seventh day and set it apart because on it He rested from all His work which in creating He had made (Genesis 2:2-3). In the second chapter of His Word we are already being told that the seventh day is to be set apart. It is declared set apart! We can find this in Exodus 20:8-11 and in Exodus 31:13-17 where Yahuah also refers back to what it says in Genesis 2:2-3 telling them to guard the Shabbat for it is a sign between Him and them throughout all generations and that it is an everlasting covenant between Him and the children of Yisra’el. To know that He is Yahuah who set us apart (Ezekiel 20:11-24)
Numerous times we are reminded to rest on the seventh day, to keep the Shabbat, to set it apart (Exodus 16:22-31; 23:12; 35:2-3, Leviticus 23:3; 26:2, Deuteronomy 5:12-15, Isaiah 56: 1-7)
If you diligently obey Yahuah concerning the Shabbat He will bring no burden through the gates of your city (Jeremiah 17:21-27) but if you do not guard His Torah and profane His Shabbat He pours out His displeasure on you (Ezekiel 22:26-31). There is even a whole Psalm dedicated to the Shabbat.
In the renewed covenant the Shabbat is still being guarded. Yahushua is the Master of the Shabbat (Matthew 12:8; Mark 2:28; Luke 6:5) and He Himself kept the Shabbat (Mark 1:21; 6:2; Luke 4:6; 13:10). It is permitted to do good on the Shabbat (Matthew 12:12; Luke 6:9; Mark 3:4; John 5:9). Shabbat is made for us, not us for the Shabbat (Mark 2:27).
After Yahushua went up in the clouds after the resurrection the apostles kept the Shabbat (Acts 15). The remnant of mankind shall seek Yahuah, even all the gentiles on whom His Name has been called (Acts 15:17). Now take a good look at verse 21! When you are a new believer all the commandments are a lot to take in so they judge that they should not trouble those from among the gentiles who are turning to Elohim except for the four instructions given in verse 20 which are: to abstain from defilement of idols, and from whoring (fornication), and from what is strangled, and from blood, BUT they proceed to say in verse 21 that Mosheh is being read in the congregations every Shabbat; Which means that they expect the people that do turn to Yahuah to assemble on the Shabbats to receive further instructions about the Torah.
Let no one but the body of Meshiach judge you concerning your eating and drinking, the festivals (of Yahuah) or a new moon or a Shabbat (Colossians 2:16-17 ). These things are a shadow of what is to come. As you accepted Meshiach Yahushua the Master, walk in Him, having been rooted and built up in Him, and established in the belief, as you were taught, overflowing in it with thanksgiving. See to it that no one makes a prey of you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary matters of the world, and not according to Messiah. Because in Him dwells all the completeness of the Mightiness bodily, and you have been made complete in Him, who is the Head of all principality and authority (Colossians 2:6-10).
Somewhere He has said thus about the seventh day, “And Elohim rested on the seventh day from all His works,” and in this again, “If they shall enter into My rest…” Since then it remains for some to enter into it, and those who formerly received the Good News did not enter in because of disobedience, He again defines a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so much later, as it has been said, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” For if Yehoshua (Joshua) had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. So there remains a Sabbath-keeping for the people of Elohim. For the one, having entered into His rest, has himself also rested from his works, as Elohim rested from His own. Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience (Hebrews 4:4-11).
Throughout the old and the renewed covenant we are told to guard the Shabbat and to set it apart. Even the Master Yahushua Ha’Mashiach and His talmadim (disciples) kept the Shabbat. We are to Hear Him and Follow Him. So we are to do as He did and guard the Shabbath. And this is not a law only for the Israelites but also for everyone who joins himself to Yahuah (Leviticus 24:22, Isaiah 56:1-7; Galatians 3:28).
